How to Pick a Perfect Watermelon

It’s watermelon season, and this delicious fruit is on sale at almost every grocery store right now.

Watermelon is one of my favorite fruits to eat during the Summer, but choosing a “good” isn’t always so easy, because we can’t see what’s behind that green rind! (or can we?)

Here are some tips below on choosing the perfect watermelon based on it’s appearance and weight.

 

Look for the yellow field spot

Yellow spots are caused from the fruit sitting a while on the vine, and this is how it gets ripe and delicious! You want that creamy colored yellow spot, or put it back! A perfectly green watermelon is actually the opposite of want you want to choose.

Make sure it’s heavy

The jucier the watermelon, the more it’s going to weigh, so you want a heavy watermelon. Compare other watermelons of similar size, and if yours is the heaviest that’s the one you want to snag!

Look for “scarring”

You don’t want a pretty looking watermelon. Find one with white lines, webbing and brown spots.  This typically means the fruit on the inside is so ripe and sweet that insects were trying to get in on the action too! The brown coarse web looking material found on the rind is caused when bees pollinate the flower and scar the membranes that later forms the fruit. The more pollination = more webbing = sweeter fruit!

Go for the dull watermelon

A shiny watermelon is an under ripe watermelon, the more dull the better. It means it’s been sitting around a little longer.

Look for the darkest skin

The darker green the skin, the better!  But you want dark green with a yellow spot somewhere!

Now, go out and get that perfect watermelon and enjoy every bite!
